This spring kept anglers on their toes. April and May brought wild swings in temperature, pounding winds, and off-color water after heavy rain, but the fishing still delivered. When conditions lined up, the Driftless rewarded us with strong, thick-shouldered brown trout in the 12”-14” range that fought well above their size. We also found solid blue-winged olive and caddis windows for anglers who timed it right. For anyone near Madison, the Driftless region’s spring creeks and cold water streams offer some of the most rewarding walk-and-wade trout water in Wisconsin, with easy access to productive waterways just a short drive from town. April and May remain prime months on these waters, and they fill fast—so if you’re thinking about a guide trip, book your preferred date(s) 60–90 days in advance so you don’t miss the action.
