Craig Amacker began his career in the fly fishing industry in 1993. He has guided anglers on the area's fisheries and taught fly fishing lessons for over 25 years. He started as the Fly Fishing Manager, Head Fishing Guide, Lead Fly Casting Instructor, and later Store Manager for Fontana Sports in Madison, WI. Throughout his tenure he advised customers on selecting and selling them the best tackle for their outings.
Madison Fly Fishing Company (MFFC) is a fly fishing guide and instruction service based in Madison, WI which is the gateway to the Driftless Region trout streams and home to the most diverse collection of fisheries on the planet. At MFFC, I specialize in giving fly anglers a quality experience on the water by guiding them to scenic, unique, and hidden fisheries they didn’t know existed “in their own backyard." These fisheries make for a good quality fly fishing experience without having to drive 4 states away or fly to another country. |

Peak MonthsApril - May
Two best months to go trout fishing in the Driftless region with dependable weather, reliable dry fly fishing, excellent nymph and streamer fishing, mashed down bank grasses, and good "banker's hours" fishing. Best conditions for beginners. June The month everything happens in the Driftless Area: trout fishing is good with mayfly and caddis hatches and terrestrial fishing, and smallmouth bass fishing kicks into high gear. Good month to book 2 days in a row - 1 for trout; 1 for bass. July - August Good months for smallmouth bass on the Lower Wisconsin river due to aggressively feeding fish, wide open casting space, comfortable breeze, and wet wading to keep you cool. September - Mid October Shorter days, cooler temperatures, fishing putting on the feedbag for winter and a return to "banker's hours" fishing. Good time to fish hoppers and streamers for big trout. Bass fishing still happening if temperatures are warm. Mid October - November We guide day trips on the Lake Michigan tributary streams for salmon, steelhead, and lake-run brown trout. And we host our Annual Fall Muskie Hunt in Hayward, Wisconsin. Both are unique fisheries with a shot at fish of a lifetime on a fly rod. January - March Escape the cold of the far north on one of our hosted destination trips to the Bahamas, Belize or Mexico to one of the premier saltwater fly fishing lodges. |
